He's the Jan Gardner Memorial Award for Outstanding Radio Copy awarded to our agency compadres at Red Deluxe at this year's Memphis ADDY awards. Check out these two spots from their award winning Memphis Grizzlies radio campaign starring our voice talent compadre Big Lou Johnson.

PS. I photoshopped a lucha libre mask on our Soderberghicon. Did you notice? Yeah? You did? Well... no. I used the scale and distort tool. Really? Oh. I didn't know you could do that. Well.. I think it looks fine. You get the idea anyway. OK. Next time I'll try that thing you were talking about. K. Thanks.

We'll Make You Think

Congrats to Zehnder Communications for winning Best of Show Overall this year at the Baton Rouge ADDY awards. Huzzah! One part of this campaign was the following handsome video with music, announcer VO, and audio mix provided by your's truly, Lucky Dog Audio Post. Which means it's time, once again, to whip out the Soderberghicon. Now... where is that thing?

Here's more news of Lucky Dog award winning work. Check out this ADDY award winning video we mixed for Zehnder Communications last year.

Plus Zehnder won ADDY's for Edgen Murray (web animation) and Louisiana Public Health Institute's smoking cessation campaign (radio). Both projects received the Lucky Dog Audio Post touch (not to be confused with the Tellington Touch).

Buck Yeah! 3

Looks like our buddies at Third Degree totally cleaned up this year at the Oklahoma City ADDYs with their Buck the Norm campaign!! Buck yeah! Buck the Norm won Best Interactive, Best Broadcast and Best In Show!!! Whoo hoo!

We had a lot of fun working on this project. Besides finding a unique piece of music we also got to get laid-back with the voice over. Plus the script required some quirky sound effects which we pulled from our SFX vault (the clapping toy monkey and the film projector clicks and hums) as well as from the voice actor himself ("yarg" and "argg" and "Bada dah Da da Da DA"). This was mos def a fun one. Buckin rock!

The Soderberghicon Rides Again 2

Posted by charles Wed, 05 Mar 2008 15:19:00 GMT

In the first chapter of the Soderberghicon story, we told you how our auspicious icon came into being. The thing we failed to emphasize in that brief narrative was the fact that we are big Soderbergh fans. Not only did we create the Soderberghicon because we think Scott looks like Steven Soderbergh, we created it because we think highly of Soderberg, the director. We are fans (not including Solaris) and so we consider his visage in a meritorious light here at the Lucky Dog blog. Therefore, anytime something we have created gets an award, we mark the corresponding blog entry with our Soderberghicon after which follows much rejoicing.

Enough said. Now lets move on to the awards.

Yes. It's ADDY time again, and this year we are extremely happy to mention that several spots produced here at Lucky Dog Audio Post brought honor and prestige to our clients. Whoo hoo!

First off, two spots we produced for Third Degree Advertising won judges awards in this year's Oklahoma City Advertising Club awards ceremony. As writer/broadcast producer/creative whizzagoth Brian Winkeler reports, the Funds for Learning on hold message he produced with us last year won the Fontana Comedy Award. Brian went on to say that "from what we hear, it was the only unanimous Judges Award amongst a contentious group." Also the "Think it Up - 2007 Addy Awards" trailer we helped create won the Judges Citation of Merit or, as Brian put it, the "aka "we couldn't give this the Best Of Show so we're creating a special category" award. Sweet!

Turning to the east, Justin Dobbs of Red Deluxe fame and fortune won big at this year's Memphis Advertising Federation awards. In his customarily effusive and overly ebullient manner Justin reported that he won the "Jan Gardner memorial award for outstanding radio copy or something" as well as "3-4 other awards in broadcast and in local-only copywriting." We will proudly Soderberghicon his spot "The Reporter" for him while playing his favorite song here at the studio, the Aphex Triplets remix of "God Rest Ye Eskimo Knife Boundaries."

The Truth Must Come Out / The Birth of the Soderberghicon

Posted by charles Fri, 01 Jun 2007 20:41:00 GMT

Yesterday Scott received the following, troubling email from Brother Jay:

I am very sorry to have to do this, but I feel like I can’t be a party to anything secret anymore.

Scott, without you knowing, I took this picture of you in the diner that I have breakfast at every Thursday. I don’t know why you were in California, or what you are trying to hide from us all, but I felt like I must expose this lie. It’s time for you to come clean. Tell us all – what were you doing in Van Nuys at Nat’s Early Bite Café? Just having eggs, or something more sinister? Hopefully, this cruel twist of fate will be the start of healing.

Seriously, I about freaked out when I saw this guy, and had to take his picture on the sly. My friends were horrified. Is this creepy, or what?

To which Scott replied:

You've caught me. For some years, I have maintained a dual career. You may know some of my films: Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Oceans' Eleven.

I am deeply saddened that you felt this necessary. I'm sure both my families will suffer.

See attached pics for more proof. As if you needed any.

Scott (Steven)

So now the truth is out. Scott is also Steven Soderbergh. And to commemorate the occasion, we have created the Soderberghicon (below and to the left).

Yes, the Soderberghicon will surely be used as Scott's iChat avatar but more importantly than that, we will use it as a badge of honor here on the Lucky Dog blog. From now on, we will drop yon Soderberghicon in all posts worthy of special attention.

We created the Soderberghicon because we care.

The Pilot, The Lawyer, and The Coach 11

Posted by charles Wed, 31 Jan 2007 15:41:00 GMT

So here's a batch of radio spots we had a lot of fun producing. Once again, the old maxim "great radio starts with great writing" applies here. With that in mind, the voice talent did some exceptional work breathing life into these characters.

Our pilot nailed that cool, underplayed, this-is-your-pilot-speaking voice:

Our lawyer knocked it out of the park with his Foghorn Leghorn meets Atticus Finch take on the script:

And finally, our coach sounded just like the coach we had for Little League football. Gruff but also kind, a little world weary yet without the angst, he's more of a weathered boyscout than a hardened soldier:

As for the announcer, what can we say? Think of him as a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Steven Wright.

Agency: Red Deluxe

Writer: Justin Dobbs

02-26-07 UPDATE

More awards for the Dog: "Coach" won the JAN GARDNER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING RADIO at this year's Memphis ADDY Awards. Or as Justin called it, the "'Judges Special Award for Awesomely Bitchin'-Ass Radio.' (Or something.)"

We also cleaned up the entire Radio category, which ended up looking something like this:

REGIONAL/NATIONAL :60 or more

  1. Red Deluxe: The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, Client; Lawyer, Title; Justin Dobbs, Copywriter; Martin Wilford, Creative Director; Scott Minor, Studio Engineer; Hallie Miller, Account Strategy
