Who Loves Ya, Baby?

allmusic (((Telly > Overview )))

People know that singing is not my bag," Savalas writes in his liner notes, "but if I say, 'Hey, this is how Telly feels about this or that song,' I can't mistakes. I can only make mistakes by pretending to be a great singer."

Perhaps the most unlikely contender for designation as a "disco" song, Telly's rendition of the song "If" by Bread only makes sense once you put the man in a dark room and ask him to serenade a Teutonic Moai head. Then some sort of Zeus-form disco emerges from the swirling violins and bassoons. This is the slow jam they play on Mount Olympus, and it tells the story of a kinky kind of platonic love, wholly unfathomable to mere mortal minds.

Today is No Music Day. Sorry. That's kind of hard for us to observe around here. Maybe next year we can play along.

Epitaph for a Thin Man

Posted by charles Thu, 15 Nov 2007 21:02:00 GMT

This is a post specifically for our buddy Sellout Music, but applies to any Dylan fans out there (Arlin, you still checking in?). It seems that Jeffrey Owen Jones, the unwitting protagonist of Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man" passed away this Tuesday. MeFi poster y2karl posted the news today along with a link to this rare footage from Eat The Document of Dylan performing the song.

I really didn't think I'd stumble upon my new favorite song while checking email tonite, but here it is. It's a Jonathan Coulter song, performed by the AI character in the computer game Portal, voiced by Ellen McLain.

Oh my goodness. Guys at Valve, we salute you.

If you care about such things, you can read about the game), read about Jonathan, even buy the thing. Or just enjoy the surreal goodness that is "Still Alive".

Halloween Treat: Opening Sequence to "Fearless Vampire Killers"

I wasn't planning on posting anything Halloween-themed today, but Krzysztof Komeda's music for the opening sequence of Roman Polanski's "Fearless Vampire Killers" is too good to pass up.

Fugue Filter

Posted by charles Fri, 05 Oct 2007 13:22:00 GMT

Wanna write a fugue? Well, here's a little anatomy lesson. Don't worry. No need to be intimidated by all that technical jargon. With the modern day wonders of the internets (read YouTube), you can learn how to fugue from either Glenn Gould or Danny Pi. Next question: what's your theme? Don't know? Need a little inspiration? How about sniveling, schmoozing music industry A&R dudes.
