Hi Kara,
While it may not be your in-law's speed, Brave Combo made a huge impression on me. Away from home, eighteen, I found Carl and company blasting their polka-rock-world thing in an Austin bar, and it was an energizing amazing musical experience. I've tried to catch them at every opportunity since.
And in the last few years, someone turned me on to Italian Astor Piazzolla, whose music blew me away in a similar way.
It's a great instrument that's sometimes a joke.. but that's not all it is!
